Timeline: Maine Sports Betting Movements

Sports betting legislation has officially made its way to Governor Janet Mills’ desk. As of April 2022, we await the signature. As we inch closer to legalization, let’s take a look back at how we got here.

  • January 2023: Maine Gambling Control Unit publishes proposed sports betting rules ahead of public hearing on January 31st.
  • August 2022: Sportsbetting is finally legal in Maine. LD 585 was quickly signed into law by Governor Janet Mills after it was approved by the Senate on May 2, 2022.
  • May 31, 2022: The operator of Maine’s Scarborough Downs horseracing track’s off-track betting business has reportedly closed due to high costs.
  • May 2022: On May 2, 2022, Governor Mills will sign LD 585, officially legalizing retail and mobile sports betting in Maine. Governor Mills is expected to sign LD 585 if her amendment to give full control to state tribes is accepted.
  • April 20, 2022: The Maine Senate approved an amended LD 585 by 23-11. This bill gives the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, and Maliseet Tribes exclusivity over sports betting, both at retail sites, and they can partner with one online operator. Governor Janet Mills is expected to sign this into law.
  • April 14, 2022: The Maine House advanced an iteration of LD 585.
  • July 20, 2021: Governor Janet Mills is able to not decide on sports betting as both versions of LD1352 stall on the Appropriations Table.
  • July 2, 2021: LD1352 must pass the Appropriations Table despite passing in the House.
  • June 23, 2021: A successful vote in the House puts sports betting back in front of Governor Janet Mills.
  • June 1, 2021: After a month-long debate, the House passes SB 1352. However, Louis Lucchini does not vote for the amended version of his bill.
  • May 3, 2021: There are three other bills in addition to Louis Lucchini’s bill. The difference between them is centered around licenses being attached to Maine casinos. Lucchini’s does not require an in-state partnership to operate.
  • April 9, 2021: After LD 553 fails, Lucchini proposes SB 1352.
  • 2020 – Bill L.D. 553 was vetoed by Governor Mills, citing that the bill was not in the best interests of the residents of Maine. This was argued and overturned by the Senate but ultimately fell just short in terms of overturning the house.
  • 2019 – Following the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) being overturned in 2018, Maine was able to put forward a case just a year later to try and become one of the first states to host sports betting.
  • 2019 – The first bill (L.D. 553) was passed to provide sports betting both online and in-person.

Top Maine Sportsbooks Reviewed

Maine doesn’t have a huge sporting tradition compared to some states. ME doesn’t have any major sports teams, so our reviews focus on how well college and minor league sports are integrated.

We evaluate sportsbooks based on their quality and provide detailed information to help you choose the best one for you. Our “best” might not be your best, but we will give you all the information you need to make sure your pick is as strong as it can be.

1. BetOnline – The Best Sports Betting Site in Maine Overall

Betonline homepage

BetOnline is a massive brand that makes the list and is one that we’ve enjoyed testing. They excel at predicting odds. We have found them to be the most consistent for good value odds among all the brands on this list.

They do great work in this regard with pretty much all sports within the sportsbook, but they excel when it comes to NFL, NBA and MLB betting lines. We compared dozens of bets amongst other sportsbooks on this page and they were the most consistent by some margin.

An additional feature to this is the inclusion of odds boosters. The markets for this range, but include things like teams to win conferences, MVP bets, and even Heisman boosters.

Banking with the sportsbook is as good as you will find. They offer many payment options, including Visa, Mastercard, bank wire, Ripple, check, and various cryptocurrencies. Deposits start from just $20 and max out at $25,000 per transaction.

You’re also getting access to one of the biggest welcome offers in the game with BetOnline. It’s a $1,000 bonus that needs to be claimed using BetOnline promo codes. The wagering requirement is just 10x, so is incredibly accessible for all players.

What we like:

  • Excellent mobile site
  • Great range of US-based sports
  • Most consistent when it comes to odds
  • Massive $1,000 bonus with only a 10x clearing rate attached

What we don’t:

  • Sportsbook design is a bit bland

2. BetNow Excellent Site for Major US Contests

BetNow sports betting homepage

BetNow is a relative newcomer to online sports betting in Maine having launched in 2016. However, it is one of the top sportsbooks for betting on US-based sports. Their extensive betting lines and excellent promotions make it the preferred choice for many gamblers.

There are around 12 different sports to wager on here, which compared to some sites is quite low. However, all the big sports are covered. This includes the NFL and it’s arguably the best football betting site. It has a wide selection of prop and future markets and during November there are no vig teaser bets on many NFL games.

College football and basketball are also heavily featured on the site in addition to the major leagues. Sports like tennis, soccer, basketball, fighting, eSports, horse racing, hockey, and motorsports also have markets before and during the game.

BetNow promo codes provide its new customers with a choice of four welcome bonuses. In addition there are reloads, a 2% sportsbook rebate and various competitions for different sports available.

What we like:

  • User-friendly website
  • Generous promo codes
  • Great value on the NFL
  • Flexible banking options

What we don’t:

  • Limited coverage of non-US sports

3. Bovada – Best Maine Sports Betting Odds for NFL, NBA and MLB

Bovada sportsbook lobby

Bovada is another top Maine sports betting site and only just misses out on the top spot. They cover a wide range of sports and offer an incredible amount of betting lines. You can even request bets if they are not already featured using the Whats Your Wager feature.

Bovada does come with a stunning-looking sportsbook though. They back up their style with strong odds and provide some of the best odds for underdogs.

Bovada is a lot more than style over substance and they back this up with a well-stocked betting site. Coverage of US sports is simply exemplary, and the likes of NBA and NFL are notable standouts here.

But it’s their coverage of sports, leagues, and markets on an international scale that we were most impressed with. Tennis, soccer, UFC, Aussie rules, and golf are just a handful of sports that they cover exceptionally well.

Finally, new accounts are going to be able to get up to $750 in bonus money. The offer is based on your first deposit and is a 75% match of this amount. All you need to do is enter the Bovada promo code INSIDERS and wager the bonus 5x to convert it to cash.

This ties in brilliantly with their rewards program, allowing you to earn points as you bet. They

What we like:

  • Massive $1,000 welcome bonus
  • Coverage is strong for US-based sports
  • Lots of Bitcoin payment options and bonuses
  • Great sportsbook site and mobile betting app

What we don’t:

  • Support replies via email might take a while

4. Everygame – Offers a Dedicated Mobile Sports Betting App

Everygame homepage

Everygame is a strong competitor in Maine’s sports betting industry, offering various options for players to manage their money. They also offer many generous bonuses and are a top site for live betting.

The mobile app gives the bookie an advantage because most sports betting in Maine is done on mobile devices. The bookie worked hard to create a high-quality mobile interface. This is evident in the user-friendly and feature-rich app. Overall, we can confirm the bookie did a fantastic job with the responsive mobile app.

We like the neat betting interface here, which appears pretty standard. One of its major outstanding features is the Hottest Bets section, not found in most bookies. They also have a multiview feature for live betting. This allows users to view the odds of multiple games without having to have multiple tabs open.

This sportsbook is a great choice for to casual bettors because of the low $1 betting limit. There is a wide range of betting options available, including popular and niche sports. The sportsbook has decent odds across the board and for NHL and NCAA basketball is one of the best.

Players who join the platform receive a $500 welcome bonus that requires an Everygame promo code to unlock. It could be higher, but we’re willing to overlook that because of the low rollover conditions.

What we like:

  • Excellent mobile app
  • Long-standing bookie
  • Covers all major sports
  • Great choice of ongoing promotions

What we don’t:

  • Average odds

5. BetUS – Great Coverage for NFL and NBA

BetUS homepage

BetUS makes up the last of our five picks for sports betting in Maine but is far from the bottom of the pile. In fact, in terms of an overall betting package, they are one of the best.

The sportsbook excels when it comes to live betting and the inclusion of NFL games here is a huge pull. We mention that because we know that a lot of players will in fact be betting on the likes of the New England Patriots, given that this is the team for a lot of Maine residents.

In terms of software, it’s one of the best. It not only looks great but assuming you’ve got the account status, bets of $10,000+ can be wagered on most sports. For lower-status accounts and bets like props and futures, you’re looking at a $500 cap with most bets.

The sports betting is enjoyable, especially when it is combined with casino games, eSports, live betting, and horse racing. This combination makes it a popular gambling site for all players, that all players will enjoy.

You can tie all this in with a great promotions section as well. The welcome bonus is a 125% match up to $3,125 on your first deposit. This comes with a 10x rollover on sports bets and a 30x rollover on casino games. You can also use BetUS promo codes to add your bankroll.

What we like:

  • Stunning looking sportsbooks
  • Excellent VIP rewards available
  • One of the best in terms of betting packages
  • Great link up between live betting and the main sportsbook

What we don’t:

  • Not as competitive with odds as some of the sportsbooks mentioned prior

6. MyBookie – Great Balance of Sports and Market Coverage

MyBookie homepage

MyBookie is our number one pick for sports betting in Maine. The state doesn’t have a huge connection with pro sports teams, but they’ve got a decent college setup and this is where MyBookie excels.

College betting throughout the site is about as strong as you’re going to find. You can bet on Maine Mariners (hockey) and Maine Red Claws (basketball) at this sportsbook, which is rare.

Moving money is another strong feature of the sportsbook. Visa, MasterCard and Bitcoin are all accessible, and we’re starting to see an increase in the types of crypto that they accept as well. Cryptocurrency is the best way to get money in and out of the sportsbook as there is fee. In addition, crypto withdrawals are processed in just 1-2 days, compared with 3-5 for wire transfers.

Outside of this we really enjoy testing the contests section, which they run a wide range of throughout the year. Top games include Squares, Survivor and Super Contest. Each has buy-ins ranging from $10 through to $100 and massive prize pools, usually in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Registering a new account with MyBookie will allow you to grab a welcome bonus worth up to $1,000. This is a 50% match offer and once the bonus is applied to your account with a 10x wagering requirement. Use MyBookie bonus code INSIDERS to trigger this offer.

What we like:

  • Huge $1,000 welcome bonus
  • Superb NBA, NFL, and MLB coverage
  • Cover all aspects of sports betting well
  • Great range of contests with hundreds of thousands of dollars up for grabs each week

What we don’t:

  • $50 minimum deposit to claim the welcome offer

7. Sportsbetting.ag – Best Sportsbook for Live Betting and Live Streaming

Sportsbetting.ag sports homepage

Sportsbetting.ag is great at sports betting for Maine players, especially their live betting section. We appreciate the presence of a dedicated live betting sections. This provides a convenient way to check what is happening in real-time and provides information on upcoming events.

One of the best features about this is that the live betting section integrated live streaming as well. This means you’re able to watch and bet at the same time, making them one of the few Maine sports betting sites to offer this feature.

College and minor league sports are well represented on the site. SportsBetting.ag has hosted a number of games from within the Maine Black Bears program over the years, which is very much unique to our list. The downside is that games are limited, but this is true for a lot of the competition as well.

They also include a solid eSports betting section, which is one of the newest parts of the sportsbook. Game coverage is good here, with Counter Strike, DOTA 2, StarCraft 2, Call of Duty, FIFA and King of Glory being the standout games on offer.

A lack of reduced juice is a small negative that should play too big a role for most, but if you’re betting here full-time, this juice soon adds up. That being said, for parlay and teaser bets, they are about as good as you will find.

The welcome offer is another $1,000 bonus which is a 100% match up to $500 on your first two deposits. You need to use the Sportsbetting.ag bonus code to claim this offer and you then wager through the full amount 10x in 30 days to clear it before it expires.

What we like:

  • Excellent welcome bonus
  • Covers a range of popular sports
  • The best in the business for live betting
  • Live streaming integrated into the live betting section

What we don’t:

  • Dated design compared to other sites on our list

8. Mega Dice – Top Anonymous Gambling Sportsbook

Mega Dice sports

Mega Dice is an exciting new site for sports bettors in Maine. There’s a huge range of sports, lots of crypto banking options, instant payouts, and can be played on the Telegram app. The fact you can use the Telegram app to create an account and bet means you can gamble with 100% anonymity.

This is one of the best NBA sportsbooks with games featuring a huge number of markets both before and during live games. They also cover various other basketball leagues. In addition to basketball, there are forty different sports including the NFL, NCAA, NHL, and MLB. It’s great for soccer as it features leagues from around the globe and extensively covers big tournaments like the FIFA World Cup.

While users can use credit and debit cards to make deposits the site is very much aimed at crypto users. There are more than 10 coins supported including the big players like Bitcoin and Ethereum. Users can deposit from as little as $1 or the equivalent. Also, there’s no site on our list that offers faster payouts, with most crypto withdrawals taking just a few minutes.

Not only is there a huge bonus for new players, but existing customers also benefit from a variety of rewards. These include reloads every week and a great VIP program.

What we like:

  • Available on Telegram
  • Complete anonymity
  • Instant payouts
  • Deep markets on multiple sports

What we don’t:

  • Overwhelming for those who are new to crypto

9. XBet – Great Selection of Props and Futures for American Football Games

Xbet top sports betting

Among the top online venues for legal and safe sports betting, XBet is next on our list. There is a vast selection of wager options on international sports. However, the website is laser-focused on the US betting market. The website features an up-to-date modern interface, and the number of sports and leagues supported by the book has increased significantly.

XBet offers odds on all major sports, such as NFL, NBA, college football, college basketball, MLB, NHL, UFC, and boxing. The site also has a free online blog that has picks and predictions for gambling experts.

In addition to a large game library and a user-friendly website, payout times at XBet are super fast. Betting with Bitcoin and other cryptos is an option for gamers. The minimum withdrawal for Bitcoin is only $25 but for fiat options, it’s $100. The maximum withdrawal is $10,000 a week.

There is a 7x wagering requirement which is one of the lowest available. There are other bonuses such as reloads, competitions, and more that you can claim using XBet promo codes.

10. BUSR – Best for Sports Betting Bonuses and Promotions

BUSR sportsbook lobby

BUSR is a very credible sportsbook that is available to all bettors in the US. The site has a user friendly interface and has picked up several awards for its great performance.

BUSR is a Maine sports betting site in that offers lines on many sports leagues. They are especially good at horse racing, which is their main focus. However, the NFL is also prioritized, which makes it a great choice for Super Bowl come February.

When it comes to promotions, BUSR is one of the best sports betting sites in Maine. The welcome bonus is generous and, for those depositing with cryptocurrency, the bonus is even better. Plus, there are plenty of other fantastic offers, such as rebates, reload bonuses, and the refer-a-friend offer. Track fans can also grab a standalone horse racing bonus.

Betonline parlay betting app

The final step is to simply tap the “add” button and your PWA will appear on your home screen. You will now see the icon for the sports betting site on your home screen and it looks exactly as a normal app would.

Is Mobile Sports Betting Legal in Maine?

Yes, sports betting was legalized in Maine in August 2022, when Governor Janet Mills signed the LD585 house bill. However, at the time of writing, there are no domestic sports betting options, either online or in-person, in ME and there’s no hard deadline for when any sportsbooks will start offering services but it’s unlikely that it will be before early 2024. It could be even further away after Milton Champion, the chief Main sports betting regulator, was placed on leave for some problematic social media posts.

When domestic sports betting finally launches in Maine there will be a maximum of four online sportsbooks, one for each of the federally recognized tribes. There will be more retail locations for sports betting available as every casino, racetrack, and off-track betting site will be eligible to offer sports wagering. However, there’s no need to wait until domestic options are available in the state as residents are able to wager with offshore sites now.

When Will Betting Be Legal in Maine?

After making its way to Governor Janet Mills’ desk for signature, sports betting is currently legal in Maine.

Previous Sports Betting Bills in Maine

2022

  • LD 585: Passed by both the House and the Senate, this bill is what would bring sports betting to Maine, allowing for three tribes to have exclusivity.

Bonuses Available at Maine Online Sports Betting Sites

Betting bonuses and special offers are essential to any online sportsbook. The sportsbook bonuses, in most cases, are one of the things that draw new players to an online betting site. And the sportsbooks are taking advantage of this by offering the best bonuses to both new and existing players.

It could be a sportsbook welcome bonus, deposit bonus, free spins, or promo codes. You want to get the most out of it, whatever it is. Below are some of the most common bonus offers you’ll find at Maine betting sites:

Offshore Sportsbook betting bonuses - BetOnline

Deposit Bonuses

The deposit bonus is the most common welcome bonus available to new players at online sportsbooks. With these, you will receive a percentage match up to a certain amount of money. For example, at BetOnline, you will receive a 50% match up to $1,000. This means that to get the total $1,000 bonus, you will need to deposit $2,000.

To withdraw that bonus as cash, you must complete the wagering requirements. At BetOnline, this requirement is 10x.

Reload Bonuses

A reload bonus is essentially a deposit bonus but smaller in terms of percentage match and overall bonus upside. You will need to either opt-in on the promotion or use a promo code on the deposit page to claim these offers.

Risk-Free/Free Bets

With a risk-free bet, you will receive your wager back up to a certain amount in a site credit or free bet should the associated wager result in a loss.

No Deposit Bonus

A no deposit bonus is a smaller bonus, around $10 to $25, that you will receive just for creating an account. The wagering requirements are never more than 1x.
