Is Sports Betting Legal in Alaska 2024?

Sports betting in Alaska simply isn’t as big or as popular as it is in many other states. Nor does the state see the need to generate revenue through gambling as some other states have chosen to do. As such, sports betting is not legal in Alaska.

When Will Betting Be Legal in Alaska?

There have been virtually no updates on sports betting since the bill introduced by Gov. Dunleavy in 2020 that went nowhere. With that, there’s no telling when sports betting will be legalized.

Alaska Online Sports Betting Bills

2022

  • Lottery Corporation Act: Introduced by Gov. Dunleavy, this bill would have brought sports betting, draw games, keno, and instant games to the state. However, it never went anywhere.

Tax on Sports Betting Winnings in Alaska

There is no state income tax in Alaska.

Payment Methods Available at the Top Alaska Online Sports Betting Sites

If you venture over to offshore sportsbooks to bet, you’ll need to fund your account. Below, we will go over some of the most frequently seen methods available to you.

Crypto Betting Options

Cryptocurrency is a payment method available at all of our recommended offshore sportsbooks. In fact, not only will you find various different versions to use, but there are promos that are directly related to cryptos, such as deposit bonuses, and more.

  • Bitcoin
  • Ethereum
  • Dogecoin
  • Binance
  • Avalanche
  • Cardano
  • Tether
  • Litecoin
  • Stellar
  • Bitcoin Cash
  • Shiba Inu

eWallet Betting Options

If you’re looking for a middle-man for funding your account with your bank account, you can use an eWallet. Additionally, you can fund your account with your active balance there, too.

  • PayPal
  • Neteller
  • Skrill

Traditional Payment Methods at Alaska Betting Sites

eWallets and crypto are not for everyone, and that is OK. Here are some other, more “traditional” methods for funding your account.

  • Credit/Debit Cards
  • ACH Transfer
  • Online Banking
  • Check my mail
  • Wire Transfer
  • PayNearMe

Betting Bonuses Available at the Best Alaska Sportsbooks

Deposit Bonuses

Usually, the biggest and most commonly claimed Alaska online sports betting bonus, the welcome bonus is a matched deposit offer of extra funds to use for betting on your favorite sports. The matched deposit bonus is where the Alaska sports betting site will match the player’s initial deposit with bonus funds.

  • For example, a matched deposit could look like “100% up to $200 Welcome Offer”.

So, for the above bonus, a deposit of $50 would mean the Alaska sports betting platform would provide a further $50 as bonus funds. This type of bonus will almost always have a rollover requirement, which means that the bonus funds will need to be wagered a certain number of times before the funds can be released as real withdrawable money.

Reload Bonuses

A reload bonus is like a deposit bonus, however, it is available to everyone and comes with less of a percentage match and potential bonus pool. To access this offer, you’ll first want to check to see if the online sportsbook you’re playing at even offers it. If it does, you’ll then need to use a promo code during the deposit process or log into your account.

Risk-Free/Free Bets

A risk-free bet allows for you to make a wager up to a certain amount while knowing you will receive it back as a site credit should it result in a loss.

No Deposit Bonus

This is the holy grail of sports betting bonuses in Alaska, and you won’t see them very often. A no deposit bonus is any bonus offer that does not require a deposit to claim. It could be bonus funds, free spins, or a free bet. If this bonus does offer bonus funds, then the amount will usually be rather small – certainly not in the ballpark of a welcome bonus.

Popular Sports for Alaska Online Sports Betting

Alaska is not exactly the sports capital of the world. There are no professional franchises there and no notable college teams either. However, there are still fans of these sports in the state.

Here, we will cover those top sports.

NFL Betting in Alaska

The NFL season is a great time for bettors. Not only is there a plethora of betting methods, but the odds shopping is at a minimum.

You will have multiple betting methods, including moneyline, spread, totals, props, futures, and more.

NBA Betting in Alaska

NBA betting is similar to the NFL, but in terms of a recommended sportsbook, BetOnline is the best spot for basketball betting, including college.

Here, you will get odds delivered to you quickly and they are typically better than competitors.

MLB Betting in Alaska

You will not run into any unexpected bet types at MLB if you also wager on the NBA, NFL, or NHL. Bovada is like the BetOnline for MLB betting—odds come quickly and are great when compared to other sportsbooks.

NHL Betting in Alaska

MyBookie tends to offer some futures that you may not find elsewhere for the NHL. When it comes to those moneyline, spread, totals, props, futures, and more, you will have excellent odds available to you.

NCAAB Betting in Alaska

BetOnline is the go-to spot here. However, BetUS is also a solid spot, too, especially during March Madness.

When you arrive at BetUS, you’ll immediately notice that NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton is the brand ambassador.

NCAAF Betting in Alaska

What makes college football betting exciting is that there are futures for numerous awards, but you’ll also, by extension, have NFL wagers too when it comes to the NFL Draft.

Golf Betting in Alaska

Betting on outright winners or top-five-, 10, 15, and 20 finishes, golf can be a lucrative sport to bet on. However, the field of golfers to bet on can be vast and the favorited golfers are favorited for a reason. At a Sportsbook site like Bovada, you will find some nice value on those more favored golfers.

Horse Racing Betting in Alaska

There are no horse racing tracks in Alaska and it’s also not permitted. However, at Sportsbook sites like BetUS, Bovada, and BetOnline, you will be able to bet on those win, place, show, exacta, daily double, and picks 3-6 results on races all over the world.

Daily fantasy sports are legal in Alaska. So, at sites like DraftKings and FanDuel, you will be able to create lineups of your favorite players from your favorite sport and compete against other players in the country for a chance at millions in prizes.

There are other DFS sites, too, like Monkey Knife Fight which focuses more on props picks.

Alaska Betting Apps & Mobile Sites for iPhone & Android

Both iOS and Android devices are supported by the best Alaska sports betting apps and sites. The betting product will largely remain the same no matter which operating system you prefer, so you won’t miss out on any betting opportunities because you use a Samsung device instead of an iPhone.

iPhone

A mobile sports betting platform for Apple customers will be available on iOS devices such as the iPhone and iPad. Most apps will require the most recent version of iOS, but the mobile-optimized page will work on any iOS device starting with the iPhone 7 and up.

Android

Because Google Play tends to restrict gambling apps, Android users will typically need to download Alaska sports betting apps directly from the bookie’s homepage. You can also visit the mobile-optimized pages using your preferred browser. The mobile-optimized pages will be accessible to a vast range of older device versions as well.

Mobile Site vs App for Betting in Alaska

At some point, you’ll naturally decide whether you prefer to use a mobile wagering app or a mobile-optimized webpage. Now, usually, this call will come down to personal preference, but most platforms for mobile betting in Alaska won’t offer a dedicated app.

Mobile Site

Mobile sites are so easy to access from within almost any mobile browser and are generally faster and more responsive than using the desktop site in Alaska. It can also be bookmarked so that you don’t have to type in the URL every time and you can access all the same features as the main page.

What we like:

  • Fast access from any supported device
  • No additional downloads or hefty memory usage
  • No need for betting platform updates
  • Offered by all top bookmakers in Lousiana

What we don’t:

  • No Touch ID or extra security layers
  • Web page maintenance can sometimes be slow

Mobile App

In Alaska, sports betting apps are specific platforms for mobile wagering that may provide useful extra features such as the addition of biometric security and app-based bonuses. Some Alaska sports betting apps, require a bit of work to set them up and install, and it’s tough to find a dedicated sportsbook app these days.

What we like:

  • Dedicated betting platform for easy access
  • Extra security features like Touch ID
  • Optimized for specific operating systems
  • Generally more visually appealing

What we don’t:

  • Not compatible with all devices and older devices
  • Requires storage and may impact memory usage

How to Create a Betting App for an Alaska Sportsbook

Most of the best platforms for mobile betting in Alaska won’t offer an actual app, rather they choose to feature a mobile-friendly website. However, by creating a browser link to your favorite betting site and adding it to your home screen, you may still have a betting app experience.

We use an iPhone for this example, but it’s more or less the same process on Android devices, too.

Step 1: Access the Betting Site Homepage

Access your mobile device’s browser app and go to the online sportsbook of your choice. For most iPhone users, this is probably Safari, but some other browsers like Chrome will also work.

Step 2: Open the Browser Menu

The menu bottom can be found at the bottom of the browser app. Remember this isn’t on the webpage but the app itself.

Safari menu button

Step 3: Select Add to Home Screen

Add to home screen button

Just press the Add to Home Screen button, and a shortcut to the Alaska mobile sports betting site will appear in your device’s app list and on your device screen.

Step 4: Rename and Move the App

Rename display

You can rename the link and relocate it to a more convenient spot too. In most situations, the site logo will also serve as the icon for the link, further giving off the appearance of an actual AK sports betting app.

Step 5: Start the App with One Tap

BetOnline link icon

Instead of using your mobile browser to access the Alaska mobile sports betting app, you can now simply click on the icon you just made to be taken to the betting site’s homepage.
