Despite the name, Caribbean Stud Poker is essentially 5 Card Stud in table game format. A majority of the same rules apply, with a few key exceptions. To sum it up, in Caribbean Stud poker you’re only playing against the dealer, you’re never bluffing, and you’re never drawing new cards (in the vast majority of cases anyway).
If you’ve ever played five-card stud, you’ll learn how to play Caribbean Stud Poker in no time. Oh, and if you’ve only ever played in brick and mortar casinos, the Caribbean Stud poker rules are basically the same for online.
You’ll take your seat at the digital table and once the room is full the dealer will start to issue the cards. Like other poker games, players will start by placing their initial bet (or ante) on the table.
Once all bets are in, the dealer will issue five cards (face down) to each player. They’ll then deal out five cards for themselves, with four, face down and the fifth and final card face up. So far so good? When the final card has been dealt and flipped face-up, the players are free to look at their cards.
Extra Bets or Not?
Based on your hand, you can then decide to put down an extra bet, also known as a call bet which is usually 2x the ante. You can also choose to fold. If you choose to fold you’ll forfeit your ante and will need to wait for the next hand to play again. You can only continue with the current hand if you make a call bet.
The dealer will then turn over all five cards and reveal their hand. The dealer would need to have an ace (A) and a king (K) (or higher) to qualify.
Keep in mind that the only hand that matters on the table is yours and the dealers. You’re playing against the house directly and the lowest possible hand a dealer can draw to qualify would be A-K-4-3-2. If the dealer doesn’t have the qualifying cards to open their hand, and you’re still in the game with your additional bet on the table, you will have your original ante paid out 1-1. The extra bet you made will be returned to you, or “pushed” back to you.
Rules for Caribbean Stud Poker
Caribbean Stud poker is easy to pick up and downright thrilling once you get the hang of it. Depending on the table, payouts can go as high as 50,000x your initial stake and the Caribbean Stud poker rules themselves are pretty universal. Keep the below in mind when playing Caribbean Stud poker.
We’ll dive into a quick recap of the rules and then cover some additional playing systems, side bets and payouts.
Players will make their way to any Caribbean Stud poker table at their preferred online casino. Each player will wager their ante, and the cards will be dealt.
The dealer will issue five cards per player, all face down, as well as five cards to themselves, 4 face down with one face up. After that, all players are free to look at their cards.
Based on the cards they have, players will choose to call (double the ante) or fold and lose their initial ante. Once all bets are in, the dealer will reveal their cards.
The dealer will need an ace and king to qualify. For a non-qualifying hand, players will win 1-1 on the ante and the “call bet” will be given back or “pushed” to the player. If the dealer qualifies and shows a higher hand than the player, they will lose both their ante and Call Bet. And, if the dealer qualifying hand loses, the player will be paid out in full, according to the cards they are holding.
Winning players will be paid out according to their hand. The higher the cards the better the chances of securing top payouts, with, of course, a Royal Flush leading the pack. Also, keep in mind that payouts may vary (slightly) depending on the online casino. Always check the payout table before starting to wager, so that you know what you stand to gain.
Payouts and Side Bets in Caribbean Stud Poker
To illustrate, this is how a regular payout table looks – but as we said above, depending on the provider these stats can vary.
Hand: Payout: One Pair or Less 1-1 Two Pairs 2-1 Three of a Kind 3-1 Straight 5-1 Flush 7-1 Full House 10-1 Four of a Kind 25-1 Straight Flush 50-1 Royal Flush 100-1 The vast majority of Caribbean Stud poker lineups will have the option to attach one or two additional bets, with the most popular being the Progressive Jackpot Bet.
It is usually a $1 side bet that must be made before all bets are in. You’ll need to get a Royal Flush, straight flush, 4-of-a-kind, full house or a flush for this bet to pay off.
Payouts run according to the current size of the progressively growing jackpot and when it was last paid out. You should always be able to see the jackpot information before entering Caribbean Stud online. Returns on winning hands will be issued according to a sliding scale, with a Royal Flush paying out 100% and a flush or similar coming in at around 10%.
Another popular side bet is the 5-1 bonus. Here players will win an additional payout if their hand, plus the dealer face-up card adds up to a three-of-a-kind or better.
The 5-1 bonus carries very real potential to increase your winnings tenfold, with a Royal Flush paying out as high as 1000-1. In line with the progressive bet, the 5-1 bonus will need to be made before all bets are in and the hand starts.
Real Money Caribbean Stud Strategy
So, with rules and gameplay out the way, it’s time to uncover some winning strategies that you can use to full effect when you next sit down to play Caribbean Stud poker. First things first.
Always Know the Rules of the Game
Any solid Caribbean Stud poker strategy starts with knowing the game’s mechanics and variables. Read up on all the basic terminology, from different ranking hands and payout structures through to side bets, RTP and other related jargon.
Play on practice node first at any of the above casinos to get a full grasp of the mechanics before wagering any cash on real money poker sites. When it comes time to play for real, you should be familiar enough with the gaming structure to know when to call, when to fold, and when to raise. Memorize Caribbean Stud poker winning hands by heart and use them effectively when they pop up in-game.
Be Careful of Playing Progressive Jackpot Bets
Progressive jackpots are tempting on any game, not least Caribbean Stud poker. A lot of players look to triple their winnings in an instant by placing (potentially) lucrative side bets. That said, always weigh up the pros and cons before putting down an additional progressive wager.
Know the odds of each wager before starting to play and do the math on potential returns. Yes, a progressive payout can take you to the top in an instant, but the actual chances of hitting a Royal Flush, straight or other high suit is very low. If you’re playing for fun, by all means, go for it, but if you’re playing for keeps you should rather keep your attention on the game at hand and avoid getting derailed by any unnecessary side bets.
Call on a Pair or Better
As a general rule, if you’re dealt a pair, you should “call”, regardless of the value of the pair.
Pairs prove to be a pretty powerful combination across the board with more than fair chances of trumping the dealer’s hand. Even a pair of 2’s has a 50% chance of beating the dealer, so always call on pairs and hope for the best.
Only Play with an Ace or a King
When your cards are dealt, you should always be looking to secure an Ace, or a King (or better). If you are issued one of these two cards in your five-card hand it’s a good strategy to keep playing and possibly call when the time is right. If you don’t have at least an Ace or a King, you should probably fold, take the knock and wait for the next hand to be dealt.
Ace or King – Stick to Your Rules
If you’re holding an ace or a king and the dealer’s face-up card is a queen or lower, you are most likely safe to bet. Make sure that the face-up card also matches one of your own cards. This way, it is far less likely to come up again in play and the dealer won’t have a pair of his own.
A lot of seasoned poker players have tested this theory on different tables and more often than not the below rings true for players looking to beat the house.
You should call when you have an ace-king high, and the dealer’s face-up card runs from 2 through to a queen. Very importantly, the dealer’s face-up card should ALWAYS match one of your other three cards.
If you’re holding ace-king high and the dealer’s face-up card is an ace or king, you’ll need to also be holding a queen or jack in your other three cards in order to safely raise or call.
Then finally, if you’re holding an ace-king high and the dealer’s up-card does not match any of yours, you should raise it. BUT, only if you’re holding a queen in your hand, and the dealer’s face-up card is worse than your fourth highest card.
Caribbean Stud Poker Terminology Guide
Right, with strategy done and dusted, we’ll take a moment to uncover the most frequently used terms when playing Carribean Stud Poker.
Caribbean Stud Poker: Plays the same as five-card stud poker. The core differences being that you play against the dealer with no option to bluff and you don’t have the option to draw new cards. Progressive Jackpot Feature: A secondary betting option unique to Caribbean Stud poker. Players will put down an additional bet, and if they receive a winning hand they will get an additional payout in relation to their hand. Hand: The five cards dealt with each player. Ante: The initial wager that must be made for a player to enter into a hand of Caribbean Stud poker. Call Bet: The second (final) wager each player will need to make in order to stay in the game. This is usually 2x the original ante. Fold: To surrender your hand and lose your ante. Hole Cards: The 4x community cards remain face down when dealt. Push: When the dealer’s and the players hand ties. Raise: To increase the previous bet. Pair: Pair of cards of the same rank in different suits. Two Pairs: Two different sets of two cards of matching rank. Three of a Kind: Three cards of the same rank in three different suits. Once you get the basics down, Caribbean Stud Poker is easy to play, fun to compete in, and carries impressive payouts across all leading titles. You’ll find a few core differences between Caribbean Stud poker and other variations. Since Caribbean Stud online is very close to the traditional 5 Card Stud, we’ll use this as a comparison.
- Dealing Cards: When it comes to Caribbean Stud poker, players will be dealt 5 cards at the start of the game. These cards will all be dealt face down and won’t be looked at until all bets are in and the hand begins. In traditional Five-Card Stud, players are dealt 2 cards, to begin with. One card is face up and the other is face down.
- Issuing of New Cards: In the same line, Five Card Stud players will have the option to pick up 3 more cards as the game continues, ending in a total of 5. The first card will remain face down while the remaining 3 will all be dealt face up. When it comes to Caribbean Stud poker, players are dealt all 5 cards at the beginning of the hand, all face down and will not have the option to pick up any more cards, until the hand has been completed.
- Gameplay: A major difference between the two poker variations is that Five-Card Stud is played against other players while Caribbean Stud poker is only played against the dealer. Other players are free to take a seat at the table, but their wagers, hand rankings, and general gameplay will never impact your own game.
- Bluffing: While common on the Five-Card Draw variants, when it comes to Caribbean Stud poker, bluffing simply isn’t possible. As you’re only playing against the dealer and not the other players the element simply does not exist. After placing their ante, players just need to either call their hand or fold and wait for the next hand to start.
- Side Bets: Lastly, Caribbean Stud poker is known for two major side bets. This being the progressive side bet and the 5-1 bonus. Either of these bets can be made before a hand starts and have the ability to increase a player’s additional payouts depending on the hand they reveal at the end of the game.
