North Carolina 86, William & Mary 64
Guard Daniel Dixon scored 20 points, but the William & Mary Tribe couldn’t overcome the defense of the No. 19 North Carolina Tar Heels in an 86-64 loss Tuesday at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, N.C.
The Tar Heels (10-3) scored the first eight points of the game and never looked back in knocking off the Tribe (6-5). It was 20-4 Tar Heels at the 12:22 mark when guard Michael Schlotman knocked down a pair of free throws to break another 8-0 run, and 49-27 UNC at the half. Dixon hit a 3-pointer to cut the margin to 68-59 with 6:02 to play, but the Tribe could get no closer.
Guard Marcus Thornton added 17 points for William & Mary, going 7-8 from the free-throw line.
Forward J.P. Tokoto had a double-double for North Carolina with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Guard Marcus Paige finished with 14 points, six assists and three steals.
The Tribe entered the game ranked 21st in the country in three-point shooting percentage at 40.2 percent, but went just 7-for-27 from beyond the arc against UNC. William & Mary shot just 37.7 percent from the field (20 for 53).
William & Mary lost for the fourth time in five games. Each of those losses has come on the road.
