The New York Knicks have spoken with free agent point guard Rajon Rondo, league sources told Basketball Insiders.

New York is looking to add a point guard in free agency, and several candidates have surfaced including Rondo, Shelvin Mack and a possible return for Derrick Rose. The Knicks also have interest in guard Dion Waiters.

Rondo, 31, led the Chicago Bulls to a 2-0 series lead against the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs before fracturing his right thumb. Rondo averaged 11.5 points, 10.0 assists, 8.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals during that span.

The Los Angeles Lakers also have interest in signing Rondo and Waiters. Los Angeles is targeting short-term deals with the goal of preserving cap space for the summer of 2018. LeBron James and Paul George both have player options and can hit the free agent market in the summer of 2018.

The Knicks and Lakers view Rondo as a point guard who can play immediately and serve as a veteran mentor to their two rookie point guards.

The Lakers drafted Lonzo Ball No. 2 overall and the Knicks drafted Frank Ntilikina No. 8 overall.

Rondo, a four-time All-Star, has averaged 10.7 points, 8.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game over the course of his 11-year career.
