Creighton 85, Marquette 70
MILWAUKEE — Forward Doug McDermott scored 25 as the No. 11 Creighton Bluejays finished up a season sweep of Marquette with an 85-70 victory over the Golden Eagles on Wednesday night at the BMO Harris Bradley Center.
McDermott went 9 of 12 from the field and scored 19 in the second half to lead the Bluejays to their third consecutive victory and seventh in eight games.
Coming out of halftime, McDermott scored 11 points in the first six minutes as Creighton stopped a 6-0 Marquette run to go ahead 53-41 when backup center Will Artino sank two free throws with 13:39 left.
Marquette came back and got within six on forward Jamil Wilson’s jumper with 8:07 left. Guard Todd Mayo made it a five-point game on a free throw with 7:27 left but McDermott’s 3-pointer with 7 minutes left made it 67-59 Creighton and the Bluejays were not threatened the rest of the way.
Mayo led Marquette with 13 points and guard Deonte Burton added 11 for Marquette, which also got 10 points each from Wilson and guard Derrick Wilson.
Marquette struggled in all offensive categories. The Golden Eagles were 2-for-11 on 3-point attempts, 20-for-36 from the line and shot 46 percent from the field.
Forward Ethan Wragge added 20 for the Bluejays, who shot 62 percent from the field and made 12 of 23 3-pointers.
Wragge knocked down four 3-pointers in the first half as the Bluejays shot 65 percent from the field and took a 42-35 lead into halftime.

NOTES: Marquette and Creighton met 42 times between 1950-88, but before opening the Big East campaign against each other this season, had not met since the 1998 National Invitation Tournament. … Bluejays F Doug McDermott began the day leading the nation in scoring at 25.9 points per game and needing 10 points to pass former North Carolina F Tyler Hansboro for 12th place on the NCAA’s all-time scoring list. … The Golden Eagles haven’t won four straight games since closing out last season with victories against Syracuse, Notre Dame, Rutgers and St. John’s. … Despite a 7-5 conference record this season, Marquette has held Big East opponents to 65.4 points per game, the lowest in the league.
