Oregon staff spit on at Arizona State
An Arizona State student spat on Oregon staff members after the Ducks’ 74-72 loss on Saturday at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Ariz., but assistant coach Brian Fish and athletic trainer Clay Jamieson decided not to press charges.
The incident occurred as the Ducks were walking from the bench to the locker room up a ramp that is surrounded by students at the end of the Pac-12 game. Two university police officers followed the team to the locker room to investigate.
Fish said in an interview that team members were also spit on at halftime. Oregon coach Dana Altman called it a security issue.
“Say what you want to us, but don’t spit on us,” Fish said.
Fish told officers that he did not want to file charges against the student, who was being held by arena security, but suggested that there should be another form of discipline.
“I didn’t want any charges, just for him to be scared,” Fish said, according to The Oregonian. “We all deserve second chances, he’s a college kid. But that was completely uncalled for.”
Fish said the intended target was Oregon guard Joseph Young, who scored 29 points to lead the Ducks.
In the first half of a rugged game, Oregon senior guard Jason Calliste was knocked to the floor after driving to the rim, but there was no foul called. Calliste remained on the floor for about 20 seconds before he walked off the court on his own.
As Calliste and his teammates left the court at halftime, Calliste threw an elbow toward a student yelling in his face.
