Top 25 roundup: Wisconsin wins 10th straight

MADISON, Wis. — Center Frank Kaminsky scored 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting to lead No. 5 Wisconsin to a 63-53 victory over Minnesota on Saturday for its 10th straight win.

Wisconsin guard Bronson Koenig added 17 points for the Badgers (25-2, 13-1 Big Ten), including 6-for-6 shooting from the free-throw line, as the Badgers are now just one victory away from at least a share of the Big Ten title. Sophomore forward Nigel Hayes contributed nine points for the Badgers, to go with seven rebounds.

Minnesota guard Nate Mason scored 11 points for the Gophers (16-12, 5-10 Big Ten). The freshman added five assists and three rebounds for the Golden Gophers, who lost their third consecutive game. Junior guard Carlos Morris scored 11 as well for the Gophers, adding two rebounds.

Much of Wisconsin’s edge over Minnesota came at the free-throw line, with the Badgers going 11-for-14 while holding the Gophers to just 0-for-1 from the stripe. The Gophers did not attempt a free throw in the entire first half.

North Carolina 89, Georgia Tech 60

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Six players scored in double figures, led by forward Kennedy Meeks’ 18 points, as No. 15 North Carolina recovered quickly from a disturbing loss three days earlier to trounce Georgia Tech.

It was the first game at the Smith Center since the building’s namesake, Dean Smith, died two weeks earlier. The Tar Heels were quick to pay tribute to Smith’s legacy by running a Four Corners offense for their first basket.

Forward Brice Johnson added 16 points, guard Marcus Paige scored 13, forwards J.P. Tokoto and Isaiah Hicks each had 12, and forward Justin Jackson provided 11 for the Tar Heels (19-8, 9-5 in the ACC), who won for only the second time in a six-game stretch.

On the Four Corners play, Paige hit Johnson coming off a backdoor move for a layup. It was one of Paige’s 11 assists.

Forward Marcus Georges-Hunt, who scored nine of Georgia Tech’s first 17 points, ended up with 15 points. He has nine consecutive games with double-figure scoring for the Yellow Jackets (12-15, 3-12).

Baylor 69, Kansas State 42

WACO, Texas — It took Baylor a while to find the right combination, but the 20th-ranked Bears finally knocked out wobbly Kansas State.

Baylor forward Taurean Prince scored 14 points with five assists and led the way during the Bears’ key second-half run to put away the Wildcats.

The Bears (20-7, 8-6 Big 12) salvaged a regular-season split with Kansas State after losing to the Wildcats (13-15, 6-9) in Manhattan, Kan., earlier in conference play.

Louisville 55, Miami 53

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — No. 12 Louisville used a 17-3 run to start the second half and three free throws by junior forward Montrezl Harrell in the final 35.6 seconds to beat Miami.

Harrell led Louisville with 21 points and 17 rebounds, hitting 7-of- 13 from the field. He gave the Cardinals the lead with two free throws at with 35.6 seconds left and added another with 10 seconds remaining to seal it.

Point guard Chris Jones, who was suspended for Wednesday’s loss at Syracuse, came off the bench for 17 points and five rebounds. Senior forward Wayne Blackshear added 10 points for Louisville.

The Cardinals (21-6, 9-5 ACC) had lost to North Carolina State and Syracuse in back-to-back games.

Guard Sheldon McClellan led Miami (17-10, 7-7) with 17 points, while junior center Tonye Jekiri had 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Oklahoma 79, Texas Tech 75 (OT)

LUBBOCK, Texas — Guard Isaiah Cousins scored a game-high 22 points and No. 17 Oklahoma hit key free throws in overtime to outlast an upset bid by Texas Tech.

Guard Frank Booker came off the bench to add 17 points for the Sooners (19-8, 10-5 Big 12), and forward TaShawn Thomas chipped in 15, which helped make up for an off-day by leading scorer Buddy Hield.

Guard Toddrick Gotcher led four Red Raiders (12-16, 2-13) in double figures with 18 points.

Xavier 73, Butler 56

CINCINNATI — Guard Myles Davis scored 18 points, helping Xavier strengthen its NCAA Tournament resume with a victory over 19th-ranked Butler.
