Jeff Hawkins is an award-winning sportswriter with more than four decades in the industry (print and digital media). A freelance writer/stay-at-home dad since 2008, Hawkins started his career with newspaper stints in Michigan, North Carolina, Florida, Upstate New York and Illinois, where he earned the 2004 APSE first-place award for column writing (under 40,000 circulation). With the Milwaukee Bucks closing in on a buyout of big man Larry Sanders, they have turned their attention to the trade market in a significant way.
The Bucks have been linked to several notable players including Denver’s Ty Lawson, Utah’s Enes Kanter and even Oklahoma City’s Reggie Jackson.
The Bucks have been in the market for a point guard since the summer when they had targeted Phoenix’s Eric Bledsoe, hoping to pair him with Brandon Knight in the back court as an interchangeable rotation.
The Bucks’ stance has been that they would not mortgage their future for a “quick” fix today, but they do seem open to making a move that bolsters their playoff hopes now and improves the roster for next season.
The Bucks have dangled names like Ersan Ilyasova, O.J. Mayo and even big man John Henson in offers to other teams, so its clear the Bucks want to make a deal and with Sanders’ $11 million per year salary likely being stretched down to just over $2.1 million per year, the Bucks have some unexpected breathing room to take on a player that could command real money in July.
