Wyoming senior forward Larry Nance Jr. recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, leading the host Cowboys over cold-shooting Colorado State 59-48 in a Mountain West game Wednesday night.
The Cowboys (19-4, 8-2 MWC) maintained their lead in the conference standings with the victory. Colorado State, led by senior forward J.J. Avila’s 18 points and 12 rebounds, fell to 19-4, 6-4.
Colorado State topped the Mountain West by scoring an average of 74 points a game entering play Wednesday, but the Rams struggled throughout with their lowest point total of the season. Their .300 shooting percentage (18 of 60) was a season low. The previous low was .327 in a 66-53 loss at New Mexico on Jan. 3.
On Jan. 7, the Rams shot only 34 percent in a 60-54 loss at home against Wyoming, which swept the regular-season series for the first time since 2009.
Wyoming never trailed Wednesday night after holding Colorado State scoreless until Avila made a 3-pointer with 15:04 left in the first half. The Cowboys surged to a 15-5 lead.
The Rams made only three of 25 attempts from 3-point range in the game.
Nance shot 2-for-3 from long range and 7-for-15 overall. Wyoming senior forward Derek Cooke Jr. added 12 points and 11 rebounds.
Colorado State senior forward Stanton Kidd contributed 15 points and six rebounds. Aside from Avila and Kidd, the rest of the Rams scored only 15 points.
