Sophomore guard James Daniel scored 22 points, leading the Howard Bison to a 73-60 victory over the South Alabama Jaguars in the final round of the Gotham Classic on Tuesday evening at the Mitchell Center in Mobile, Ala.

Junior guard James Carlton added 17 points for Howard (7-7), which shot just 41.3 percent from the field but amassed a 46-32 rebounding advantage.

Freshman guard Taishaun Johnson scored 17 points to lead South Alabama (2-7), which was held to 30.6-percent shooting. Sophomore guard Ken Williams scored 11 points.

Howard jumped out to an 8-0 lead over the first 1:31 after Daniel made back-to-back 3-pointers. South Alabama answered with a 7-0 run and tied the game at 10-10 on a 3-pointer by Johnson with 15:40 to play in the opening period.

The Jaguars went up 15-13 on two free throws by Williams with 12:04 remaining and maintained a slight lead until the Bison tied the game at 27 on a layup by senior guard Jared Norsworthy with 2:52 to go. The Bison finally reclaimed the lead on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Damon Collins with 1:50 to play and took a 36-33 lead into the locker room at the break.

Howard extended its lead early in the second half, going up 41-35 on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard James Miller and 47-37 on two free throws by Daniel. South Alabama cut the deficit to three on a pair of free throws by Johnson with 13:41 remaining, but the Bison responded with an 11-2 run to regain their double-digit lead.
