Devon Walker scored nine of his game-high 16 points during an early 18-point run, and Maryland-Eastern Shore rolled to a 65-52 victory over Maryland-Baltimore County at Hytche Arena in Princess Anne, Md., on Tuesday night.

The Hawks, who won earned their second win in a row and third in four games, held a 9-7 lead early. UMES (3-6) then broke the game open by taking a 27-7 lead midway through the first half.

Walker, a senior guard, made three 3-point shots during that stretch. UMBC (0-6) missed 11 consecutive shots from the field and didn’t score a point for a span of 9:36.

UMES got plenty of offensive production, as three Hawks scored in double figures. Junior guard Devin Martin and senior forward Mike Myers both added 15 points.

Senior guard Wayne Sparrow led UMBC with 12 points. He snapped the long first-half dry spell with a layup. Junior forward Cody Joyce contributed 10 points.

UMBC’s offensive problems continued, as the Retrievers shot just 38 percent from the field and made only 10 of 23 free throws. They have been hurt by the loss of sophomore guard Rodney Elliott, last year’s top scorer, sidelined since the first game due to a shoulder injury. Elliott is out indefinitely.

UMES will go for a third straight win when it hosts North Carolina Central on Friday night. The Retrievers’ next game is Thursday at George Washington.
