Dion Nesmith made a jumper from the lane with three seconds left to give the Hofstra Pride a 66-65 victory over the visiting Stony Brook Seawolves on Friday night at the Mack Sports Complex in Hempstead, N.Y.

Nesmith, a senior guard, got the ball near the left sideline but quickly cut toward the lane. He then sank his 15-foot jumper in traffic to give Hofstra (2-1) the victory.

His basket completed a late-game Pride rally where it scored 12 of the final 16 points.

Junior guard Juan’ya Green led Hofstra with 22 points. Nesmith followed with 18.

Stony Brook (1-2), led by junior forward Jameel Whitney’s game-high 26 points, appeared in command late. The Seawolves held a 61-54 lead before junior guard Ameen Tanksley hit a 3-pointer for Hofstra.

After that, sophomore guard Brian Bernardi tied the game with his four-point play — 3-point jumper and a free throw.

The momentum swung back and forth in the final moments. Stony Brook twice took the lead in the final two minutes, the last time being on a Warney lay-up in traffic with nine seconds left.

But that just set the stage for Nesmith’s game-winning play. Nesmith finished the game 8-for-12 from the field.

This was the first time the Long Island schools met in six years.
