William & Mary dominated the first half, then held off a late charge from Howard to earn a 56-49 victory Tuesday in Williamsburg, Va.

Guard Daniel Dixon’s 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first half gave the Tribe a 33-16 lead, and William & Mary extended the margin to 20 after the break.

The Bison cut the deficit to 54-49 on two free throws from guard James Daniel III with 1:12 to play, then got the ball back after a William & Mary turnover. However, forward James Carlton missed a jumper, Tribe guard Marcus Thornton made two free throws, and William & Mary came away with the win.

Thornton finished with 14 points to lead the Tribe, though his scoring didn’t come easily. He shot 4-for-14 from the field, including 1-for-8 from 3-point range. William & Mary guard Omar Prewitt hit four 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Forward Terry Tarpey pulled down 12 rebounds and blocked two shots. He also had seven assists, as the Tribe finished with 16 assists on 20 made baskets.

Daniel led all scorers with 23 points, but no other Howard player finished in double figures. The Bison (1-2) shot 36 percent from the field and turned the ball over 15 times.

William & Mary (1-1) shot 41.7 percent and committed 13 turnovers.
