Guard Tyler Hubbard scored 15 points and guard Eric Laster added 13, including a key three-pointer late, as the Loyola-Maryland Greyhounds defeated the Cornell Big Red 76-71 in their home opener Sunday afternoon at Reitz Arena in Baltimore.

Loyola (1-1) bounced back after a 71-59 loss at Texas Tech on Friday night.

The Greyhounds played better in their home opener. Cornell (1-1) scored the game’s first six points, but Loyola rebounded thanks to some good long-range shooting and led for most of the game.

The Greyhounds made eight of 19 3-pointers (42 percent) while Cornell hit just three of its 16. Laster and Hubbard each made three 3-pointers.

Laster’s final one proved to be the biggest. Loyola went on a 12-point run in the first half that gave it a 20-11 lead and appeared in command when it was up by nine with just over 12 minutes left.

Forward Shonn Miller then scored seven of his game-high 20 points to spark a Cornell rally. Miller’s two free-throws tied the game at 66 with 3:34 left.

Loyola then answered quickly when Laster nailed a three-pointer 14 seconds later. The Greyhounds went on a 6-0 run and never trailed again.

Loyola made seven of 10 free throws in the final 3:34, and the Big Red missed six in a row from the field after tying the game at 66.

Guard Galal Cancer added 19 points for Cornell in the loss and guard Robert Hatter scored 17.
