NBA game roundup: Smart injured in Celtics’ win

BOSTON — The Boston Celtics lost rookie guard Marcus Smart but won a game, downing the injury-ravaged Indiana Pacers 101-98 on Friday night.

Smart, the sixth pick in the 2014 NBA draft, suffered what appeared to be a serious injury to his left ankle when he was fouled on a drive to the basket in the first minute of the fourth quarter. After a lengthy delay, he left on a stretcher, his left leg being held in the air by the team doctor.

The Celtics (2-3) rallied after Smart went down, led by seven with 3:33 left and then hung on to end a three-game losing streak. Forward Jeff Green grabbed an offensive rebound and hit two free throws with 6.1 seconds left to make it a three-point game.

Pacers guard Donald Sloan was fouled with 3.1 seconds left and made two free throws to cut the lead to 1.

The Celtics, who hit their final field goal with 3:33 left, called time and guard Avery Bradley was fouled with 2.9 seconds left. He made the free throws and, after a timeout, unlikely contributor Gerald Wallace picked off the inbounds pass.

As teammates stood around Smart as he was attended to, the crowd broke into a chant of “Mar-cus Smart.”

The Celtics tweeted Smart would have an MRI later Friday night.

The injury allowed the Pacers to select any Boston player they wanted and Indiana chose forward Wallace, who had played a total of three minutes in the first four games, all in one game. Wallace hit the free throws and stayed in the game for some important minutes.
